Position: Senior Cloud Performance Engineer at ClickHouse

About the Team:

The Cloud Performance Engineering team at ClickHouse is responsible for building our cloud-native ClickHouse Cloud platform, which is set to transform the OLAP space. We are seeking exceptional performance engineers with a proven track record in understanding the performance limits of distributed databases and creating tools for measuring performance and scalability in complex systems. The ideal candidate will have a background in database benchmarking, test automation, system engineering, performance analysis, and capacity management. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on our elastic, limitless scale, high-performance, serverless ClickHouse Cloud.

Key Responsibilities:

– Conduct system performance benchmarking, database performance analysis, capacity sizing, and optimization.
– Troubleshoot and debug application and server errors and logs, and triage accordingly.
– Provide recommendations for configuration tuning and optimizations to address performance bottlenecks.
– Collaborate closely with ClickHouse core development team, cloud team, and security team to improve the performance of ClickHouse Cloud.
– Plan, enable, and drive Chaos initiatives across engineering teams, based on internal priorities.
– Develop, deploy, and manage tools to systematically run chaos experiments and measure their impact.
– Gain a deep understanding of large-scale distributed systems.
– Study problems in software resilience, operational processes, and delivery spaces.
– Extend our entire backend to enable Chaos Engineering techniques in the system.
– Observe running systems and prioritize innovative ways to disrupt them.

Qualifications:

– 6+ years of relevant software development industry experience in building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems.
– Software development experience in Go, C/C++, Java, or similar languages.
– Strong understanding of concurrency, multithreading, and deployment of distributed system architectures.
– Experience in developing cloud infrastructure services, preferably with Kubernetes.
– Proven track record of leading and shipping large-scale technical projects in collaboration with multiple experienced engineers.
– Expertise in a public cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their infrastructure as a service offering (e.g. EC2).
– Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team and across engineering teams.
– Strong problem-solving skills and solid production debugging experience.
– Passion for efficiency, availability, scalability, and data governance.
– Thrives in a fast-paced environment and sees themselves as a partner with the business, with the shared goal of moving the business forward.
– High level of responsibility, ownership, and accountability.
