Principal Software Engineer – Data Analysis

We are seeking a visionary and hands-on Principal Software Engineer who can collaborate with multiple teams to solve complex problems and design cloud-based solutions for our clients.
In this role, you will tackle our toughest challenges by developing high-quality and architecturally sound systems that align with our business objectives. As AI plays a significant role in our company, you will also lead initiatives to expand our AI portfolio, both internally and for our clients. You will also help establish technical standards and drive our overall technical architecture, engineering practices, and methodologies. The ideal candidate will have the ability to translate business goals into practical solutions, work collaboratively with various teams, and influence upper management while also being hands-on with engineers.
Reporting to our Director of Engineering in our Bellevue, WA office, or working remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer, you will:
– Serve as a technical leader on complex cross-functional projects
– Break down complex problems into simple solutions
– Develop scalable systems for enterprise use
– Solve challenging problems in distributed systems and work with modern cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes)
– Guide and mentor team members on architecture and best practices
– Review and advise on project designs
– Foster strong partnerships with product management, UX, and other key areas of the business
– Drive the integration of advanced AI capabilities into complex multi-system architectures, defining patterns and best practices, and leading AI initiatives to address technical challenges and improve productivity across teams
Requirements:
– 10+ years of software development experience, with a focus on highly scalable and available applications
– 10+ years of programming experience with full stack technologies such as Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript
– 2+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.)
– Experience developing and supporting REST APIs
– 1.5+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining AI-augmented features for enterprise SaaS products
– A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
– Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
